Dry Cleaning Alternatives

Recently, one of my clients emailed me with question about Dry Cleaning Alternatives…such a great topic! The last time I went to the dry cleaners was in 2017 (so, I know a thing or two about home-washing.) Here are some of my eco/financial friendly options…

The Laundress Wool and Cashmere soap is what I use for my silk, cashmere, wool and alpaca garments. Add a capful to the tub or washing machine (on a low cycle with cold water.)

Then, hang to fully dry. DO NOT add to the dryer. EVER. (I once put a gorgeous cashmere sweater on tumble low thinking…”oh, it’s 85% dry, this will be ok.” That sweater is now a tiny blanket for my cat.

Use a sweater comb to soften the fabrics and remove lint.

*If you prefer machine washing over hand washing, I advise placing the garments in a mesh bag first…something like this.

If washing silks, soak the silks in a bath to loosen dirt. Then, hand squeeze the water from the garment (don’t twist). Hang to dry and use a hand steamer to eliminate wrinkles.

For leather pants, (or any leather piece) turn the pants inside out and soak in a bath of water just enough so that the pants are wet and saturated (but do not leave in the bath for an extended period of time.) Then, place the pants in the dryer on high heat. I use the quick dry cycle about 2x. This process will help pull the pants back into shape.

For all else, I will give a good steam!

If you dry clean often, consider one of these for the home: LG Steamer Closet
