Self-Portraiture
I began the practice of portraiture with myself, starting at age 15, when I painted and illustrated my face and figure for school projects. At 20, I put down the charcoal and instead worked as a model posing for other artists for several years.
At age 31, after a multi-year hiatus from personal art-making, I decided to revisit the practice of portraiture when I realized I did not have many pictures of myself as an adult. I wanted to have some record of what I looked like.
In the years that followed, self-portraiture would become my anchor in a lengthy period of transition, transformation, and deep healing. And it has evolved into a space for play, experimentation, professional study, and continued self-expression. Today, it remains my creative and spiritual medicine. Below is a small selection from the thousands of portraits captured since that first day in December 2015.
