Style Brief 06.23
How do you develop a “look”? a signature style? (Apply this question to any creative medium.)
Honestly, I think the key is experimentation. And getting messy over and over and over again.
In the process of play is discovery.
Through mistakes we learn what doesn’t work and what possibly did…
Through risk we stretch comfort zones and break new ground…
Through curiosity and questioning we broaden awareness and see new potential...
In the short six weeks creating these Style Briefs, I am learning more about where/how I want to develop my style than I ever did just pinning, dreaming, and page flipping… though what I learned through those methods got me to actually start dressing.
So, if you ask me how to find a look for yourself, I will tell you to CREATE over CONSUME. Start by trying everything on. See what works and what possibly could… Get messy. Make mistakes. Take risks. Follow your curiosity. In the process of play is great discovery — and your signature look.

Don’t mind the socks!! …More from this small capsule of blue and thoughts on how mini collections form within a larger capsule:
I believe when we buy what we LOVE, capsule collections develop naturally in the wardrobe. You may find yourself drawn to the same patterns, colors, and textures over and over again. There is something about these design elements that speak to your soul. They soothe or invigorate something within the spirit. Lean into them for additional guidance on how to incorporate more of what you love into your wardrobe.
For example, after tracing my buying patterns over the past ten years, I see a range of turquoise-blue (and a particular green) showing up most often outside of the dominant black, gold and denim of my wardrobe. And because I say YES to what I love vs forcing myself to conform to an in-season palette, I end up with a collection of pieces that can be mixed/matched/swapped and reorganized into a number of get-ups.
This particular dress/jacket/purse/silver combo is one of my personal wardrobe favorites…each of these pieces has very special meaning to me (yes, I can tell you where I was in my life when I purchased each one!) … and I feel it is the truest expression of my spirit/human journey. We all deserve to have pieces like this in our wardrobes. If you have one, tell us about it below 👇🏻🌟
