Style Brief 02.23

Jupiter in Aries ♈️ Dec 20, 22 - May 17 2023 — “What happens when I allow myself to expand?” This is a question presented in this year’s edition of Planning by Starlight (written by Briana Saussy and designed by me, grab your digital copy through the link in my bio).

Aries is the initiate. The warrior. The leader of the field. Jupiter highlights and increases. Together, these two offer more power to protest, excite and pop! (Think 1987’s Dirty Dancing movie and Whitney Houston’s I want to Dance with Somebody song — the energy is 🌬💥.)

When I was putting this denim Style Brief together I started thinking about the fashion we see expressed by the sign of Aries… (bc I always associate the fabric of Denim with Aries for its rugged spirit. Denim isn’t dainty and it’s often the go-to choice for DOing shit. Need to get dressed fast? Throw on a pair of jeans and a T and race out the door. Need to wrangle up the cattle? Suit up in denim for the great outdoors. Ready to adventure forward as a western pioneer? (Hello Gold Rush and the birth of the Blue Jean) Jeans are a symbol of Independence and Freedom — 🔑 words for the sign of Aries.)

Speaking of which, the 15th Amendment was passed in 1869 while Jupiter was in Aries (ratified the following year when Jupiter moved through Taurus.) Giving voice/freedom to speak up through the vote of Black Men. (Of course, we know loopholes minimized this.)

But, back to denim as a symbol of the bold spirit. How might your mood shift if you wore more denim? What mobility and versatility can it offer you by being in your wardrobe?

And, might we see it more of it this spring? (We’ll have to see — I can say at quick glance, the common Jupiter-Aries fashion trends for the past 100 years seem to be colorful and body shaping. We’re not tripping over fabric. Could the Herve Leger bandage dress make a comeback?)

When Jupiter is in Aries, we get tired of hiding. It’s a time to express the desires of the spirit. “What happens when you allow yourself to expand?”

Welcome to this week’s video! First I have to make a correction — it’s *studding* not *studying* the jacket (you’ll catch it in the first few seconds.)

Second, my intention with these videos is to demonstrate how to build and curate a sophisticated, diverse and functional capsule wardrobe in a variety of styles.

The issue I take with most capsule wardrobe advice is that the items featured in these closet examples are often a limited color palette of black, beige, sunflower or white, and the garments are usually the basics of basics like jeans, cable-knit sweaters, tees, an oversized blazer, kitten heels and your basic car coat, trench or pea coat. (There is a post on my blog that explains why you’ll never catch me in a peacoat.)

I know these capsule collections are designed to be minimal but they don’t leave space for people who love the efficiency of a capsule system AND who also love glamour and color and edge and pattern!

So, even though I’m showing a lot of black and denim lately, I also have quite a bit of bold and unapologetic color and unusual pieces that I consider MY foundational pieces in my capsule wardrobe — I’ll show you more of these as the weeks go on.

For now, here is a variety of outfits based around a denim jacket — style with jeans or leather pants, combat boots or knee high boots, rock with a basic T or warm sweater… and have fun with the accents. I like to keep things practical and unfussed so I wear minimal accessories like a pair of earrings or head scarf (good for bad hair days).

Little gold hoops I’ve had since middle school. Everything here is second hand or I bought retail 7+ years ago before the second hand boom (because, as you know, I love to treasure hunt for designer vintage). QUALITY PIECES LAST FOREVER.
