Dreaming Your Way to Style
Sometimes, the first step in making a style change is the dreaming, the marinating in what can be, the construction of a vision, while remaining in ‘comfort’ with and cushioned by the familiar.
And, clearing without a plan or vision for filling or containing an emptied space can leave one vulnerable to a rush of incoming energy that isn’t wan.
Which is why transitioning a style or brand inmultiple sessions or steps can be a buttress against emotional and spiritual collapse.
So, how do you begin dreaming up a new style?
I encourage you to begin feeling into what you might want your style or body of creative work to look like. Spend time on Pinterest and Instagram, with books and magazines from the library and in the online archives of auction house catalogues and fashion magazines. Museums also have digitized collections that are free for public use.
Collect the source material that pings your heart. Keep a folder on your desktop, phone, or inside your desk drawer. I have a small plastic bin that houses images I’ve ripped from magazines, cards from Hallmark, gallery show cards and all sorts papers from the past 15 years that inspire me to dream far and wide. I sort through this box about every six months when my creativity feels stagnant and I need a reminder of what inspires me.
Set aside uninterrupted time to build this visual folder. Turn off distractions. Say NO to any and all internal and external filters (such as…is this appropriate for…so and so always told me…does this fit me/my theme/my natal chart….) And, close the door to the creative shamers. (SO IMPORTANT.)
Now get to dreaming!
