On theMove: Capsule Dressing for a New life Chapter
In late 2025, I went on a multi-week adventure through the Southwest states of American, and then on to Europe, and eventually landing “deep in the heart of Texas”. Or should I say…“deep in the heart of a Texan?” *wink
Anyway, this carousel is the start of a personal capsule wardrobe series I have been playing with: building a small foundation of garments that can be worn here, there, and anywhere, using accessories to completely overhaul the look so that it fits in any fashionable environment. Truly, I can take this long black dress (from a British brand) and style it in ways that make it feel very New York, Berlin, and even west Texas.
For this specific look, I grabbed my go-to snakeskin boots, a go-to cowboy hat, my go-to brass hoop jewelry, a purse I’ve had for ten years, and layered the base look with a denim jacket. You’ll see me endlessly repeat a small collection of accessories in these carousels because it’s repetition that creates distinction with one’s style. Uniforms worn day in and day out may feel boring when wearing, but they stand out to those who are watching. You want to build visual associations in your ‘look.’
How to make sure your wardrobe isn’t a one-trick pony:
Build out a base uniform. The foundational pieces of your wardrobe should provide versatility in weather and setting. For this carousel of looks, I started with a heavy wool-blend, thin strap dress. The white snakeskin boots brighten the look and help provide visual balance with the lighter camel-colored hat on top. Too much black and I might look like I’m attending a desert funeral.
Layer garments. Add accessories. Add a jacket, scarf, or multiple necklaces to your base piece(s). Consider multiple hanging charms for your handbag. Tie a scarf around the handle of your bag or on your wrist. Finish any look with a hat.
